Holiday Donation Brighten the Holidays for Many

Generosity of Donors is Heartwarming

WOONSOCKET – The generous donations from local businesses, faith-based organizations, and foundations helped make the holidays brighter for hundreds of low income families living in northern Rhode Island. Community Care Alliance (CCA) administered the distribution of food baskets, toys, clothing, gift cards, and more. Here are just some of the ways community members came together to provide for those in need this holiday season:

CCA coordinated the distribution of 491 food baskets for families in need. Baskets were provided by Salvation Army, St. James Episcopal Church, St. Joseph's  Catholic Church, St. John the Evangelist Church, First Assembly of God, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Beacon Charter High School for the Arts, Mount St. Charles Academy, Globe Park Elementary School, Woonsocket Elks Club, and Moo:US. The Bellingham Middle School boys basketball team helped distribute baskets.

The Providence Journal Holiday Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation awarded a $5000 grant to CCA to purchase and distribute needed toiletries, diapers, hats & gloves, socks, backpacks and bags for babies and teens. More than 100 children were served through this grant.

The Woonsocket Rotary hosted the Annual Christmas Party for families in the Woonsocket Shelter and other CCA housing programs which included a magician, lunch, holiday treat bags, presents for children, pictures with Santa, music and other festivities. Sharon Contillo donated and signed her book “The Little Christmas Ornament” for each family. Santa arrived on a fire truck, courtesy of the Woonsocket Fire Department, a delight for the 55 children and their families.

The New England Patriots Foundation provided an opportunity for 10 youth served in several of CCA’s programs to participate in their Gifts from the Gridiron holiday event. Each youth received a $400 gift card and was paired with a New England Patriot player or representative to shop for a winter coat, toys, and gifts for family members. This was the eighth year CCA youth have participated in this special event.

CCA processed over 950 applications for the local Adopt-a-Family Program that matches donors with children in need; over 1,940 Woonsocket children received holiday gifts/clothing through this program.

Several companies/organizations donated gifts and/or cards for more than 500 children who were not eligible for Adopt-a-Family due to age or geography—The Salvation Army, BankRI, Swarovski N. America, Silgan, Amica, First Assembly of God, Five Below, and Moo:US
