Peer Recovery Specialists are an Integral Part in Recovery Supports
Peer Recovery Specialists are role models and mentors. Their special qualifications are founded on their lived experience with mental illness and, often, addiction that affords them the right to say, “I’ve been there.” Community Care Alliance developed the first training of its kind for individuals with this experience who are interested in showing others that recovery is not only possible, but probable; and a job opportunity to these distinct advocates to provide informed support to individuals receiving mental health or addiction services.
The 5-day, comprehensive training is endorsed by the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals. Based on evidence that peer support is a critical component to the continuum of care that help an individual sustain recovery and overall wellness, Peer Recovery Specialists are trained to be active, non-judgmental, empathetic listeners. They advocate for those they serve, inspire positive change, and most of all, instill hope. They do this by their example. They help battle stigma, both in the community and within individuals seeking recovery.
Community Care Alliance has trained over a dozen men and women who are now state certified Peer Recovery Specialists and employs six at the time of this writing. As the value of peer support continues to gain recognition and stronger endorsement by hospitals, policy makers and managed care companies, more trainings will be offered and more Peer Recovery Specialists will be utilized within behavioral health services. Our programs are at the forefront of this movement.
