VMB School Assessment & Stabilization Services
Developing emotional competency, critical thinking and academic skills
For those students who are experiencing psychiatric or emotional problems that interfere with their ability to function in their home school setting, the Viola Berard Education Center offers a 45 day program where multiple assessments are performed and therapeutic interventions implemented in order to improve a student's ability to self regulate.
How Do We Do This?
In order to determine the most appropriate educational environment for a student, a complete neuro-psychological evaluation is completed by Dr. Dana Osoweicki, PhD and Dr. Natalia Mieczynski, PsyD from The Center for Psychology and Learning.
What Assessment Measures Are Used?
Weshchsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement, Right-Left Orientation Test, Wide Range Assessment and Learning, Children's Category Test, a functional behavioral assessment are some of the tools used to determine a student's strengths and target areas for improvement.
Collaboration with Parents and Sending Schools
Our school clinician meets within parents/caretakers in order to complete a social history. Meetings are scheduled conveniently for parents/caretakers and can either be completed at the Viola Berard School or in the home.
Our teachers stay connected to the sending schools teacher in order to coordinate and maintain the academic and behavioral supports that have been tried and have proven successful with each student.
Students participate in skill groups to develop emotional competency, have access to 1-1 counselling with a school clinician, and our offered daily behavioral support from school staff.
Additionally, our school clinician can help support families by making the appropriate referrals to outside agencies that could be beneficial. Care coordination between these agencies, parents, student and sending school is also provided.
