Class Prepares Student for New Job
I attended the Administrative Office Management training in October 2017 and graduated in January 2018. One of the first things that I did in the class was register on the Indeed.com website. I was checking job postings every 2-3 days. On Monday, April 9, 2018, I saw this posting:
Front Desk Receptionist
Watch Hill Properties - Westerly, RI 02891
Small Westerly, RI real estate company seeks an individual for part-time weekend employment: Fri-Sun until 7 pm, start time is negotiable. Office experience and knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word + PowerPoint. Must be reliable, well-spoken and very organized. Salary negotiable subject to experience. Minimum 3 years’ experience. Send resume with hourly rate desired.
Since I live in Westerly, I did a search on Google and found out the company’s address and everything about them. The next day, Tuesday, April 10, I drove to the location with my resume and spoke with their administrative assistant. I asked questions about the job, including the hourly rate.
Because of my training and proficiency in MS Office, I was offered their highest rate of $13 to $14 an hour. I left my resume with them and was asked to fill out their employment application. I took the application home with me to fill out, paying attention to every question and without rushing. When I was writing down hourly rate desired, I put $14. I completed the application and returned it the same day. I was then offered a job interview Wednesday, April 11 in the morning.
The interview went very well. I took a typing test and was told that the most important thing they were looking for is an individual with MS Office skills. So the minimum of 3 years experience really didn’t matter, what mattered was the MS Office Certificate. The following day, Thursday, April 12, I received a phone call with a job offer and was told that this position usually pays $13 an hour. But since I put $14 on my job application, they decided they will pay me $14 an hour.
Because I attended the Administrative Office Management class and applied myself each day in class, it has given me the opportunity to improve my MS Office skills. It prepared me for an office environment. This training has made a difference in helping me change my career. I found a job that I was looking for that works for me.
Thank you to all staff members, for doing a great job and helping people to get ahead in their lives.
