A Portrait of Promise—Sam

Sam, City of Woonsocket Division of Solid Waste Worker

As Part of the Portrait of Promise Series

By The Harbour Youth Center

Meet Sam, an essential worker and member of The Harbour youth center. Sam has been a participant in the WIOA  program (Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act) through The Harbour since February 2019, and began doing paid work experience with the City of Woonsocket Solid Waste Division in March 2019.

The Solid Waste Division is responsible for the effective collection of all trash and recycling for the city. His paid work experience ended in June of that year, but the city was so impressed with Sam that they kept him on as a temporary employee through the summer. During this time, Sam was encouraged by his coworkers and supervisors to get his driver’s license, as it is a requirement for permanent employment. With help from his coworkers and youth center staff, Sam got his permit and eventually his license. At the time, there were no positions open, but the department didn’t want to lose Sam, and he continued to impress. By the fall, he was made a permanent employee and received a significant raise. We are so proud of everything Sam has done, and look forward to his continued success. Stay safe, Sam! We’re thinking of you!
