During ShelterWalk 2.0 Participants Actively Support Homeless People
For 33 years Community Care Alliance (CCA) has hosted ShelterWalk, a highly visible, community walk to show support for the agency’s Woonsocket Shelter and homelessness prevention programs. In light of the pandemic last year, the event was rebranded as ShelterWalk 2.0, a virtual event encouraging participants to join in wherever they are and do an activity of their choosing. This year ShelterWalk 2.0 will happen from May 19th through May 26th and the agency is encouraging participants to share their activity on their social media pages using #ShelterWalk2point0.
ShelterWalk 2.0 will benefit the agency’s Client Emergency Fund in an effort to stave off homelessness by providing for clients who may be a few steps away from losing their home because they are unable to pay for groceries and rent, utility and medical bills, a car repair, or have other unexpected expenses.
Community Care Alliance continues to outreach and serve more and more people living on the streets. This winter, with the Woonsocket Shelter and transitional housing apartments at capacity, CCA began a new program called Safe Havens at its Main Street location. This space provides a place where homeless people can go during the day to get out of the weather, have a cup of coffee, or lunch, and acquire personal care items, clothing, and other needs for basic survival. They can also speak with someone about how to access resources and/or services. In the last 6 months, the new Safe Havens program has placed over 50 people living on the street in local motels and as drop-in center is currently working with over 120 individuals who don’t have a home to go to.
