Crossroads

A Poem

Older man poses and smiles in front of tan marble wall. He is wearing a blue t-short with "Myrtle Beach" text on it and Pride Pin.
Meet Cliff- poet of “Crossroads” Community member, Community Advisory Board (CAB) Member, and poet—Cliff gifted us with the opportunity to publish his poem right here and share it with others for World Mental Health Day. He regularly enters poetry contests and continues to grow as a poet. We hope it can serve as a reminder of the twisting and winding roads that life can bring, while also reminding us that support is here. With his voice heard and supported, Cliff can continue to make a difference—not only in his own life, but through the poems that can touch others.
By Cliff C.

By definition a place where two or more roads meet
A place where a choice needs to be made
Where each choice can put you in a different spot
We have maps and GPS’s to help guide us
And even though there can be construction
And detours that send us in a different direction
Usually we can get to our destination
Maybe a little late but safe and sound
But in the metaphysical world
In the living of our daily lives
It doesn’t always work that way
Yes there are choices to make
We get guidance from friends and family
From books and podcasts and previous experience
We even get construction and detours
That can send us off in a different direction
But sometimes in life
The world can pick you up, blindfold you
And drop you off in a place that you’ve never been
Or ever expected to be, with no guidance
With no GPS or roadmap
Just left there at a crossroad you never saw coming
In a place that’s scary and new and lonely
You could just give up and sometimes you want to
At first you just try to survive, to get to the next day
And eventually you try to plan a new path
To find a new destination
A destination you were never looking for
You try to find your way back
But the road you were on is gone
Erased from existence, nowhere to be found
You yearn for the road you were on
With your partner, your navigator
But that road is gone, and you’re alone
And that’s where I’m at right now
Trying to find my way,
Praying, searching, and surviving.
A new crossroad, a place I never expected to be.
